結び目とは絡まった紐のことである．一見して乱雑に絡まっている結び目でも，ある構造に着目すれば，特徴を見出せることがある．その特徴を研究することは，例えば高分子といった複雑に絡み合った物質の特性を研究する上でも，有益である．そこで，カンドルと呼ばれる代数を活用して，結び目が備える種々の構造を研究する．
カンドルは結び目を研究する目的において優れた代数系である．カンドルの公理は，ライデマイスター変形と呼ばれる，結び目図式の局所変形を代数的に表したものと理解することができる．また研究代表者は，先行研究として，結び目に対して定まる結び目カンドルの基本類が結び目補空間の三角形分割と密接に関係していることを示している．これらの事実は，結び目の研究にカンドルを用いることの有用性を示す根拠とも言える．本年度は，このような根拠をさらに見出すことを目標に，研究を行った．
どのような結び目に対しても，その結び目を境界とする，空間内に埋め込まれた向き付け可能な曲面が存在する．この曲面をその結び目のザイフェルト曲面と言う．一つの結び目に対して，ザイフェルト曲面は無数に存在する．特に，結び目の図式からあるアルゴリズムに従ってザイフェルト曲面を構成することができる．これを，その結び目の，標準的ザイフェルト曲面と言う．
研究代表者は，カンドルの鎖複体から群の相対鎖複体への新たな鎖写像を構成した．特に，この鎖写像による結び目カンドルの基本類の代表元の像は，標準的ザイフェルト曲面の三角形分割と理解することができる．このことを活用して，標準的ザイフェルト曲面から種数が最小のザイフェルト曲面を構成する方法について研究を行った．研究は順調に進んでいるが，まだ結論までには至っていない．そのため，研究期間を一年間延長して，研究を継続することとした．
ザイフェルト曲面は結び目が備える代表的な構造の一つである．このザイフェルト曲面とカンドルとの間に関係性を見出したことは，本研究の目的を一つ達成したと言える．さらに，標準的ザイフェルト曲面から最小種数のザイフェルト曲面を構成する方法が確立できれば，結び目理論のさらなる発展の礎となるはずである．
順調に進んでいるため，本年度の研究をさらに発展させる．
