近年、読解力と語彙習得のためには学習者が自身の語彙レベルの読み物を多量に読むことが望ましいとされている。しかしながら、多読に取り組めない学習者も多い。そこで、音声を伴う多読(Reading While Listening:E-RWL）の導入により、読解力と語彙力を増進し、さらに、テクスト読解のスピードや聞き取り力の改善を図ることができると考える。学習の困難の一つが音声入力と文字認識の不一致と考えられる。RWL(E-RWL)により、学習者の英語力が飛躍的に伸びる可能性がある。ただし、RWL(E-RWL)については、未知の部分も多く、今後充分な研究が必要である。

第二言語の語彙習得における類似性と非類似性の効果ー事象関連電位から探る語彙指導法

本研究では，第一言語（L1）と第二言語（L2）の語形が類似した3種類の語彙（同根語・言語間同音異義語・和製英語）とL1とL2に語形の類似性がない語彙（非同根語）を学習者がどのように理解し，産出するのかについて事象関連電位を用いて調査することで，L2の語彙知識の発達メカニズムを明らかにし，効果的な語彙指導法を考案する。語彙習得において，外来語，とりわけ和製英語は弊害と見なされる。しかし，L2での語彙産出の難しさは新たに学習した語形の記憶の不完全さに一因があることを考慮する時，外来語や和製英語のL1としての語形をL2の語形の習得に役立てることができれば，L2での語彙産出が容易になるであろう。
2021年度は日本語を母語とする英語学習者との比較研究として，英語を母語とするスペイン語学習者を対象に単語の理解に関する実験をゴードン大学のDr. Susan Bobbと共同で実施した。この実験では翻訳認識課題に加え，認知コントロールの指標としてAX-CPTタスクを行うことで，個人差が単語認識の処理過程に与える影響について検討を行った。その結果，プロアクティブ・コントロールに依存している学習者ほど，語形が類似している単語や意味が類似している単語に惑わされやすいことが明らかになった。この実験結果については，2021年11月にPsychonomic Societyでポスター発表を行った。2022年度には論文にまとめ，国際学術雑誌に投稿予定である。また，2021年度には日英バイリンガルと西英バイリンガルの語彙産出に関する論文がFrontiers in Communicationに採択された。
昨年度同様，オンライン授業が続いたため，日本語母語話者を対象とした対面実験を実施することができなかった。
2022年度は，昨年度・一昨年度に実施できなかった日本語母語話者を対象とした翻訳認識課題の対面実験を実施する予定である。 -
テクスト読解に寄与する語彙力の分析的研究に基づく語彙習得の効果的な指導法開発

英文読解における、未知語の推論の達成度について、語彙レベルを制限した短い物語文を用いて、未知語の特性（語彙の使用頻度、文中における文法的役割、推論の手がかりおよびストラテジー）に関して調査した。学習者の語彙レベルによる推論の傾向や、達成度、推論の手がかりとなる文脈の果たす役割、テクスト全体の意味理解などに差異はなかった。調査した10語の未知語の達成度には大きな差異があり、それぞれの語彙の特性が傾向として伺えた。テクスト読解と未知語の推論については、総じて、達成度は低いながら、従来の研究成果とほぼ同じレベルの達成度であることから、語彙の学習には多くの文脈に複数回触れることが必要であると言える。
外国語学習において、教えるのも学ぶのも、最も困難とされている領域の一つである、語彙習得について、未知語の推論という新しい可能性のある観点から取り組み、言語習得への示唆を得ることができた。語彙習得においては、物語文読解の文脈では、使用頻度や学習者の持つ語彙サイズやそれぞれの語の文中における役割や活用できる文脈の意味など、さまざまな要素の活用が考えられる。一方、未知語の推論における達成度は本研究の他に従来ある研究では、そもそもありま高くない数字が示されてきている。この結果が示唆することは、語彙の習得には、多様な文脈における多数の出会いが必須であるという事である。このことは、英語教育への応用が可能。
