Previous research has documented a shift in how language learners process their second language (L2). Initially, they pay attention to how L2 words overlap in their form with words in the native language (L1). With increasing L2 proficiency, language learners are less susceptible to these form-related similarities across translations (Sunderman & Kroll, 2006) and focus on the meaning of words (Talamas et al., 1999). At question in the current study is the extent to which individual differences in cognitive abilities attenuate the translation strategy that less proficient learners use. We hypothesized that L2 learners with stronger proactive control, as indexed by the AX-continuous performance task (AX-CPT), would be less susceptible to form-related interference across translations. Results suggest that, contrary to our hypothesis, participants who rely more on proactive rather than reactive goal maintenance experience increased form-related as well as semantic interference. Translation strategies in recognition appear to be influenced by individual variation in cognitive control and may be sensitive to task conditions (Braver et al., 2009). We interpret these results in light of the Revised Hierarchical Model (Kroll & Stewart, 1994) and the Dual Mechanisms of Cognitive Control (Braver, 2012) and suggest that models of translation be expanded to include task variables.

  • Bilingualism alters the neural correlates of sustained attention Reviewed International coauthorship

The present study examined whether monolingual and bilingual language experience—including first and second language proficiency, exposure, and age of acquisition—modify the neural mechanisms of attention during nonverbal sound discrimination. English monolinguals and Korean–English bilinguals performed an auditory two-stimulus oddball task while their electroencephalogram was recorded. Participants heard a series of two different tones (high-pitch tone vs. low-pitch tone), one of which occurred less frequently (deviant trials) than the other (standard trials), and were asked to mentally count the number of infrequent tones. We found that in the early time window, bilinguals had larger amplitudes than monolinguals in response to both standard and deviant trials, suggesting that bilinguals initially increased attention to identify which of the two tones they heard. In the later time window, however, bilinguals had a smaller event-related potential (ERP) effect (deviant minus standard trials) relative to monolinguals, suggesting that bilinguals used fewer cognitive resources for the infrequent stimuli at later stages of processing. Furthermore, across the entire sample, increased exposure to the native language led to larger early, middle, and late ERP effects. These results suggest that native language exposure shapes perceptual processes involved in detection and monitoring. Knowing more than one language may alter sustained attentional processes, with implications for perception and learning.

  • Developing Effective Approaches to Acquire Vocabulary on the Basis of Analytical Research on Vocabulary Competence to Promote Reading Comprehension

The research investigated the accuracy rates of inferencing unknown words attained by learners using short narrative passages with controlled vocabulary levels. The accuracy rates were measured on frequency of vocabulary words, grammatical functions, contextual clues, strategies used from the contexts, and reading comprehension of the texts. The accuracy rates of the target words in the form of non-words varied greatly, probably caused by the characteristics of each target word. The over all accuracy rate of all the target words resulted in similar range as obtained by earlier research results although it was not high. The result of the whole research suggests that for learners to acquire vocabulary words, it probably is necessary to repeatedly encounter the vocabulary items in a variety of contexts.
