Stacking occurs in the composite creation of documents (e.g., such as academic papers, presentation slides, and notes) and when they are refined in research activities. It is important but actually difficult for researchers to satisfactorily accumulate the deliverables for each work and their circumstances so that they can skillfully conduct later work. This problem becomes particularly serious for research beginners. Therefore, there is an urgent need to train research beginners in skills to nail down gaze targets in contexts that continue to increase according to progress as research advances. The final goal of this research was to develop novel methods of training beginners in skills on refining research by extracting the candidates of gaze targets from accumulated contexts and visually presenting them to research beginners. Our project has proposed methods of accumulating the contexts involved with trial and error in the processes of refining research documents and of organizing them into context networks. This paper mainly gives a detailed description of the theoretical methods for dynamically extracting the important sub-network, which is to be carefully examined according to the focus node, from the context network.

Research activities are composed of stacks of several tasks such as surveys, creation of novel ideas, writing of research documents, and their elaboration. It is quite important to successfully accumulate the results and circumstances of these tasks (i.e., contexts). It is further important but difficult to understand the contexts and to apply them to later work. In particular, it is much more difficult for research beginners to ensure noteworthy targets within contexts that continuously increase as the work progresses. The final goal of this research is to develop methods for supporting the accumulation of contexts and facilitating their utilization by visually presenting those that are noteworthy to research beginners. This paper mainly describes a method for organizing the contexts and extracting important portions from huge organized contexts. This paper also describes an experiment that was conducted by using actual history data, and discusses the features of the proposed methods on the basis of the results.

The need for training students in presentation skills has been raised. Skills in the creation and elaboration of slides are particularly important but it is actually difficult to train students in such skills. It is important for students to properly understand defective portions in slides so that they can polish the slides by themselves. However, it is difficult for novices to detect defective portions and it generally depends on individual work by experienced people such as professors. Such work imposes a huge burden on professors and prevents detailed guidance including the linkage of oral explanations, gestures, and slide descriptions. This research was aimed at developing a mechanism for extracting the defective portions in slides and providing them to students on the basis of hybrid analysis of two promising sources: (1) constitutive features being inherent in the slide data and (2) audiences' visual tracking behaviors of slide content. This paper mainly describes methods of extracting candidates for problems that inhibit understanding from presentation slides by audiences on the basis of constitutive features of slides and audience gaze.

Collaborative exploration is one of the essential factors in advanced intellectual activities such as group work in project-based learning (PBL) and research work. Skillful sharing of the intentions of search and their results is quite important to enable collaborative exploration to be smoothly conducted. However, such sharing is usually difficult for members since they often face difficulties in expressing search intentions into queries and suffer from the troublesome activity of page selection. Such problems become more serious for novices. In particular, it is important but difficult to sufficiently understand the differences between search intentions and actual browsing situations. Moreover, there is often insufficient mutual understanding of differences in search policies between members of collaborative exploration since they tend to superficially confirm the search results. This research was aimed at developing novel support to cultivate the consideration skill of search strategy focusing on the novices' understanding of search contexts. This paper mainly describes the framework of support methods and provides a system overview. This paper also discusses the basic effectiveness and characteristics of our methods based on the results obtained from an experiment.

E-mail discussions are often conducted during intellectually challenging activities such as research, cooperative learning, and software development. It is important but generally difficult to successfully grasp the processes of the discussions and their conclusions since a mass of e-mails is accumulated in e-mail applications. Furthermore, actual e-mail discussions contain descriptions of diverse sizes. These features hinder grasping the discussion processes. Although some research projects have aimed at extracting discussion processes, these existing methods have not considered the diversity of description granularity. Therefore, our research is intended to develop methods for extracting the discussion processes and a system for visualizing the discussion processes. This paper mainly describes a system for visualizing discussion processes in a mass of e-mails. Initially, this paper describes the system design based on a study of the features of actual e-mail discussions. This paper also describes the development of a prototype.

This feature brings about the difficulty in grasping the discussion processes in addition to basic features such as increase of number of e-mails. Although there have been some research projects which aim at extraction of discussion processes, these existing methods have not consider the diversity of description granularity. This research has aimed to develop a support system for extracting discussion processes and their visualization. This paper mainly describes methods for extracting the discussion processes considering the diversity of description granularity and complicated connections between them. This paper also describes the overview of target service and the outline of support system.

Research activities normally consist of numerous works such as paper composition, discussions and surveys of literature. It is important for smooth accomplishment of research to strategically accumulate the context information (i.e. processes of the work, methods and results) and to skillfully utilize them. However, it is difficult to accumulate relevant context information since most automatic methods target only the specific work and/or researchers tend to selectively use different applications suitable for each purpose. This research aims to develop methods of organizing context information across the different styles of information and applications. This paper outlines methods to strategically accumulate context information and to organize it. Moreover, it describes an experiment using test-case data and discusses the effectiveness of the methods in light of the results.

In the process of research activities, researchers compose presentation slides and academic papers alternately. Naturally, there exist strong relationships between presentation slides and papers on a theme. Therefore, slides and paper should be skillfully elaborated in cooperation with each other. However, it is difficult for researchers to elaborate the slides and papers under collating them because of difference of their constitutive features. This research focuses on the presentation slides as the main cradle for organization of research contents and their examination. This research aims to develop methods for generating the spadework of a paper from presentation slides. This paper describes methods for creating of framework of a paper based on the analyses of presentation slides. This paper also describes methods for extraction of paper components from slides and for placing the components on the framework. Furthermore, features and problems of the proposed methods are discussed based on the results of a case study.
